DIDX Shares Opp for Involvement in Investing in ICTs
DIDX has chosen to showcase the CTO Conference on Investing in ICTs in Emerging Markets. With a world population of 6.7 billion people, 1.2 billion land line telephone lines and 4.0 billion mobile cellular subscribers, there is a need to bring new ICT investment into developing countries. But what is ICT? And what does "emerging markets" mean?
ICT is Information and Communication Technologies. This year's CTO Conference on Investing in ICTs in Emerging Markets in London, UK Dec. 9-10, 2009, will help to bridge the gap by discussing future policy, regulation and business models to maximize opportunities for joint investments.
Emerging markets is "financial markets of developing countries, usually a small market with a short operating history." What are examples of developing countries? The American Mathematical Society has a list on their website from Afghanistan to Zimbabwe.
The conference will be attended by an International delegation consisting of ministers, regulators, funding agencies, operators and infrastructure providers
See real life case studies where investment has made a significant return. Find out how the Global economic crisis has had a significant impact on competition. Put your questions to Ministers, regulators, investors and operators and get answers.
Why not extend your conference stay to view the city from the famous London Eye after a days shopping on Oxford Street or enjoy a traditional English tea at the Ritz? Take the train and visit Truphone, British Telecom, Orange, 2Telecom, and more in UK at http://www.voipproviderslist.com/country/voip-united-kingdom/voip-providers-united-kingdom/.
For speaking and sponsorship opportunities please contact Isla Falconer on 0208 6003807 in UK or +44 208 6003807 and email on i.falconer@cto.int. Visit http://www.events.cto.int/Investing_in_ICT_09.

Oh! Only SMBs Go to that Conference
That is exactly what a service provider whose clients are SMBs said to me last week when I said DIDX is a media partner and exhibitor at SUPERCOMM '09 in Chicago. "Oh! Only SMBs go to Supercomm. Not sure if we would get much out of it." .... ???? What?
Get much out of it? Our clients on DIDX are service providers like the one who spoke to us but we do have some social networking, call forwarding, ip pbx, and other services mashed up with content that appeal to small businesses, and we need small businesses. So does my friend who made this statement. They are our bread and butter. They keep our DIDX buyers alive. In fact, we bring many of our DIDX wholesale customers with us to our booth so they can provide examples of why to use DIDX to other service providers visiting the booth but also so they can speak to the SMBs and consumers who drop by. A win-win!
It's the one event where the broadband world, in wireless and wireline, copper and fiber, triple play and quad play, IPTV and VOIP, 3G/4G, IMS, social networking and storage and security come together.
It’s where buyers and sellers converge, stories are swapped, prices are negotiated, deals are made.
It’s a breeding ground for success.
In fact, SUPERCOMM actually attracts service providers, carriers, smbs, entrepreneurs, early adopters, technical and business consultants, and all types which means rich, rich results will occur from participation. Where there is diversity, the potential increases for multifarious but still practical innovations in business and technology. Me? It's like I couldn't wait for ITEXPO West last week, and it was awesome... I am excited about SUPERCOMM.
Sign up at http://www.supercommshow.com/didx. The event is Oct. 21-23, 2009 in Chicago at the McCormick Center.

VoIP is Liberalized in Egypt!
So VoIP is liberalized in Egypt. The market for telecommunications market was officially deregulated since the start of 2006 according to the WTO agreement.
In fact its telecom market is a leader in the North Africa and Middle East market. All three of its mobile networks have 3G services and are in the midst of deploying wimax networks. Egypt alone had 12 million fixed-line subscribers at the end of 2006.
The Cellular phone market was a duopoly with prices artificially high but witnessed in the past couple of years the traditional price war between the incumbents Mobinil and Vodafone. A 500 minutes outbound local and long distance calling plan currently costs approximately USD $30 as compared to approximately US $90 in 2005. While the current price is not so expensive, it is still above the international price as plans never allow 'unlimited night & weekend minutes.'"
A third GSM 3.5G license was awarded in April 2006 for US$3 billion to a consortium led by the UAE company Etisalat (66%), Egypt Post (20%), the National Bank of Egypt (NBE) (10%), and the NBE's Commercial International Bank (4%), thus moving the market from duopoly to oligopoly.
An interesting bit of information from Wikipedia: "Opportunity cost of conflict
A report[7] by Strategic Foresight Group has calculated the opportunity cost of conflict for Egypt since 1991 is almost $800 billion. In other words, had there been peace since 1991, an average Egyptian citizen would be earning over $3000 instead of $1700 he or she may earn next year."
"Egypt's mineral and energy resources include petroleum, natural gas, phosphates, gold and iron ore." More than a few of them are a good reason to offer Egypt phone numbers on DIDX for sale to the wholesale IP communications companies frrom 170 nations buying, trading and selling phone numbers! Wireless telephony companies can join DIDX and with a softswitch and the right network, a short, simple interop, will be able to sell phone numbers such as from Egypt.

Inveneo ICT Projects in Sub-Saharan Africa, Nepal and Bangladesh
A couple of DIDX members who are IP communications service providers have started buying Africa phone numbers (Kenya and South Africa and need more, especially in the Sub-Saharan parts of Africa but also need Morocco, Ghana, Egypt, Nigeria, Algeria, Namibia, Rwanda, and Republic of Congo. Many of the same members are serving on the fringes of Inveneo projects:
* A solar-powered computer lab for two extremely rural girls schools in Tanzania
* A long-distance WiFi and VoIP network pilot to deliver e-government and calling services to remote villages in Nepal
* A battery-powered computer lab for an orphanage in Ghana, where the children will now have much better access to information and real job opportunities with new ICT skills.
I am blogging about Inveneo because ever since I first met them at a Gitex conference in Dubai, I have been an avid fan of their work with real practical changes and assistance in ICT in emerging countries. I remember their bicycle powered laptop!
In June, Students Bridging the Information Gap (SBIG) brought ICTs to students and orphans at the Good Shepherd Orphanage (GSO) in Kasoa, Ghana. (DIDX needs Ghana phone numbers... wireless phone numbers are fine! Contact .)Working with their local Inveneo Certified ICT Partner (ICIP), One Village Foundation, SBIG installed an 18-computer lab in the library, which they are also populating with books donated by the Delbarton School in Morristown, New Jersey.
In March, the Ukengee (Sunbeam) Foundation teamed up with Inveneo ICIP, Kicheko Ltd., to install a new computer lab at the Kilwa Masoko Secondary School in rural Tanzania. More than 800 students couldn't wait to get into the computer lab and connect with the world via the Internet. The headmasters and teachers attended computer skills classes at Viafrica, so they could use the computers more effectively. Watch the grand opening video.
Inveneo must be a rewarding group to work with. They are celebrating their five year birthday with a party in San Francisco, CA. at their office October 16th from 6 to 9PM. Need directions? Click here. RSVP at this email link.
There are now 48 Inveneo Certified ICT Partners in 16 countries, and Inveneo and their partners have brought access to life-changing ICTs to more than 800,000 people in rural and underserved areas of the developing world.
