See Aastra on IAX vs SIP during Astricon at http://www.viddler.com/explore/suzannebowen/videos/3/. We were on a hunt and gather trip through the exhibits for more experiences prior to our CEO Suzanne Bowen's lightning talk at Astricon.
Aastra's expert and Astricon exhibitor and Max Glucksmann, DIDX partner and owner of Comtel Networks discuss issues of SIP protocol during Astricon 2008. The problem is firewalls do not like incoming voice that is seen as out of the norm. When the negotiation takes place, the port will say to the incoming RTP, "Un uh, no no. We won't have that." This is why you have a SIP aware firewall to make it go through or use a SBC (session border controller). Two sessions not synchronized.
IAX is everything in one on the same pipe. No questions. Everything is already open. He believes IAX is superior to SIP because of this. 50% of DIDX members use IAX2 or IAX2 with SIP.
You can also hear more about Aastra, Polycom, Astricon, XML and SIP on the VoIP Users Conference at http://www.mefeedia.com/entry/sip-polycom-aastra-astricon-xml/10842780/.
